January 2019 Newsletter
Greetings! I am very excited about all the plans that took shape in the month of January. Here is a quick summary:
Collaborations: As I mentioned in my intro letter in early January, we are planning on collaborating with other professional associations on some of our activities. The National Society of Black Engineers Baltimore Metropolitan Area Chapter extended invitations to our members to attend their Jan. 15 workshop on the “5 C's of Crafting a Powerful Presentation”. Additionally, the Association of Women in Science invited our members to participate in their Jan 29 workshop on "Maximizing Your Workplace Benefits." Both workshops were announced in previous emails sent to our members. We will continue to pursue more collaborative opportunities with other associations, especially those who are willing to support the continuing education of our members.
We are also looking to host keynote speakers at our future L&N events with various topics including entrepreneurial, business and technical-related matters. Should you have an interest in a topic or have a speaker to recommend, please share your ideas with our Educational Committee Chair, Dr. Rabih Najib.
National AAAEA: our Chapter hosted a social event on Jan. 15th, on behalf of the National AAAEA, welcoming our Arab American professionals at the Transportation Research Board (TRB) Annual Meeting. Thanks to Dr. Rabih Najib and Mr. Eissa Haj-Hammad for their leadership on this activity.
Internship: We are currently working hard to identify internship opportunities for our students, and we asked our corporate sponsors to offer them internship positions. We will post these positions, as they become available, at the "Opportunity" tab on our website. So, keep on the lookout for these opportunities.
Members' News: Our members continue to make a positive impact at the national and international level. A recent example is the contribution of Dr. Nader Abou Hassan related environmental studies. BBC has a program on this impressive effort. We posted the video on our homepage, www.aaaeadc.com. It’s worth watching.
Please share with us your accomplishments so we can celebrate them with our Chapter members.
Upcoming Events: Our Activity Committee Chair, Ms. Jina Al Assadi, is planning many social events for us this year to include bowling, picnic, tea party, and game nights. We will be sending separate announcements for each upcoming event in the upcoming weeks and months. Also, you may want to check our calendar at www.aaaeadc.com.
Members' engagement: As we continue to identify opportunities to enhance your experiences with our activities and events, we are asking for your engagement in our Chapter by joining or renewing your membership, participating in our events and share your feedback with us. We will be starting a membership enrollment/renewal season in February and I hope you join and/or continue to be part of our Chapter. Should you have any question about membership, please don't hesitate to contact our Membership Committee Chair, Ms. Amal Abou-Sef.
Miscellaneous: We are working on developing our website to make it more informative and useful to our members. A new feed from “Engineering.com” has been incorporated. This will offer our members the opportunities to catch up on the latest news regarding our professions.
With Dr. Rabih Najib and Dr. Luai Huleihel leadership in assisting with the enhancement of our website, we are looking forward to an exciting and informative tool to share with you.
Last but not least, we are facing extreme cold weather conditions this winter. It is important to watch for frostbite and hypothermia, and prepare yourself, your vehicle(s) and your home for frigid weather conditions. For more cold-weather safety tips, visit www.ready.gov/winter-weather, and please stay safe!
From the AAAEA-Capital Area Executive Board, we wish you and your loved ones a safe, happy and prosperous 2019.
